You can’t have a website without a domain name. If your website is serving UK customers, you should have a website address ending with .co.uk . Your domain name should be short, easy to spell and unique. Avoid buying a domain name if someone has already purchased another version of it, for example; ending in .com / .org.uk / .biz etc. While your main website address will end with .co.uk, you should consider buying the .com version of your domain name too, just to stop someone else from copying you, (hence if the .com is already registered, choose a different .co.uk).
Domain names are usually renewed each year. Its important you renew your domain name if you want to keep your website as if you let it expire, someone else can buy it and start a completely new website using your name.
Like a domain name – without hosting, your website won’t work. Website hosting is where your website is stored so it can be accessed via the internet and viewed online. Most modern websites require hosting in order to be built.
The cost of hosting varies from one company to the next, and there are different levels of hosting depending on the size, and style of website you have. Its not always best to opt for the cheapest, as there is often a reason. Assuming you are based in the UK, choose a UK based hosting company that is well reviewed online.
Similar to a domain name – website hosting is renewable each year. If you don’t renew your website hosting, its likely your website will be initially suspended, then deleted if never renewed. So its important to pay the renewal on time.
Its not uncommon for website owners to use their own gmail. or other email address for enquiries from their website. However, it can look much more professional if your email address matches your website domain name. For example, rather than using firstname.lastname@example.org you could use email@example.com.
Email accounts are usually provided with a hosting package and can either be accessed by a secure, online webmail account or set up to work on your computer, phone or tablet.
If you don’t already have a domain name or hosting, I recommend my clients use TSO Host. TSO are one of the UK’s largest providers of domain names and hosting, and my own preferred hosting company. They are trusted by over 250,000 other website owners and 5 star rated on Trustpilot. They provide daily back ups of your website and offer technical support 24/7 should you ever need it.
Hosting starts at around £4 per month, (there are often discounts if you pay for a year or more in advance) and you can also include a domain name too.
Once I have started setting up your website, I will advise on a suitable website package. Don’t worry about any technical information – You only need to register and purchase the domain name and hosting. I will take care of all the other settings to make your website and email address work.
