Reiki

Pronounced
'ray-key' - Reiki is Japanese for "Universal Life
Force Energy" - the
essence of life that flows through all living things.
Reiki uses the life force energy to help release
physical, emotional and mental pain or blockages.
Its
roots are in Tibetan medicine but it was rediscovered in
the 19th century by Japanese theologian Dr Mikao Usui
who claimed to have received the secrets of Reiki in a
vision. It is now practiced the world over after his
pupils brought the technique to the West via Hawaii.
Based
on a concept of unlimited universal energy that can be
'drawn down' by practitioners and channelled into areas
of the body where healing is required, it promotes
healing in body, mind and/or spirit. |

 |
A
Reiki treatment involves the laying of hands either on or just
above the body over the seven chakra points, starting at the
crown chakra on the top of the head down to the root chakra
which is located at the base of the spine. It is normal for the
client to lie down on a bed or couch, but it is possible to sit
if necessary. You will
not be required to remove any of your clothing, though you may
want to remove shoes.
Healing
energy is then channelled through the practitioner into the
client who may feel sensations of warmth or tingling. Often
though a client will feel nothing at all during a treatment and
presume it hasn't worked, but Reiki energy is intelligent and
very subtle and can work in ways that are unexpected. It will
work on the part of the body or psyche that is crying out for it
the most.
For
example, someone may come for a Reiki treatment to help relieve
their migraines. After three or four sessions they may decide it
isn't working for them because their migraines haven't stopped.
But what has been going on is that the Reiki has been working on
their arthritic knees which the client has come to live with and
accept as day to day living. In this way, it was more important
for that person's wellbeing that the pain from the arthritis was
relieved first rather than the migraines.

Reiki
is an automatic process and will flow to the area
necessary. Any attempt to force the process will result
in a general lessening of the power available.
Remember that the Reiki Practitioner is a channel for the energy to be given and NOT the source of the healing. This explains why treatments do not
drain the giver and actively replenish and charge Reiki
Practitioners as well as their clients.
Most
Practitioners will not talk during the session but will
discuss her findings with you afterwards & give you
feedback.
Reiki
is great for getting rid of stress, tension and pain and
it is so gentle and safe that it is perfect for anyone
– the young – even newborns, pregnant mothers, older
clients, and those with great physical pain or
disability who are unable to have any vigorous bodywork.
It
is also a wonder for depression, insomnia and anxiety as
it brings on a feeling of inner calm and strength. I
have heard it described as the feeling of being wrapped
up in a big protective ball of cotton wool. And I have
to agree! |
Likewise, you do
not need to have any aches, pains or issues to have Reiki.
It
is a treatment that can be taken to simply relax and reconnect
to your innerself. Some people relax so much they sleep for the
whole treatment! But Reiki energy doesn't need you to be awake,
it works on you anyway and can continue to do so for days
afterwards. You can often feel energised and calm for up to a
week after a session.
Apart
from the physical benefits, Reiki encourages and supports
positive personal change such as improving the diet, having more
rest, exercise or leisure time, and may reduce the need for
alcohol and tobacco. It can allow you to respond more calmly to
events, and build on a more resourceful state of being.

Reiki can enhance everyday life, and regular sessions
help to ward-off illness and fatigue.
There
are three degrees in the Reiki system and all
practitioners should hold at least the second degree
which means they are an attuned Practitioner, whereas
the first degree only equips you to practice on family
and friends.
Samantha
is a Reiki Master which is the third level of Reiki
& means she can teach & attune other people as
well as treat people.
“I
began studying Reiki many years ago now when I first
started my Complementary Therapy studies yet every day I
am still learning more & more from it. Reiki is such
a diverse, powerful but gentle healing system - it never
ceases to fascinate & amaze me.” – Samantha
Atkins
Although
even one Reiki session can make a difference, for best
results a minimum of 3 sessions is advisable - Chronic
conditions may take longer.
The
benefits of the treatment can be enhanced if you can be
restful for a while afterwards and drink plenty of water
to help the body detox. Be open & responsive to the
needs of your body, ie slow down if you feel tired, have
alone time if you are feeling thoughtful and allow any
emotions to flow.
Reiki
is especially beneficial to pregnant women as it has no
contraindications so is totally safe for both woman
& child. In fact Reiki has a relaxing and reassuring
affect on both Mum-to-be & the unborn child inside
her.
